NOSE - Dark cherry and raspberry open with unexpected depth, forest floor and clove settling in behind, star anise and blood orange adding a brooding complexity that announces itself early. This is not what you were expecting from Yarra Valley Pinot.

PALATE - Cherry and raspberry lead before darker, more savoury currents take over - forest floor, spice, a whisper of blood orange threading through with quiet authority. The tannins are suede-like and considered, fresh acidity keeping everything lifted and alive, the finish long and layered with the kind of depth that suggests patience will be rewarded. Unfined, unfiltered, and entirely its own thing.

NOTES - Yarra Valley Pinot Noir has a reputation - elegant, red-fruited, approachable. The Duck Pond Vineyard didn't get the memo. Perched at 200 metres on the northwestern end of the Mount Dandenong range, south-east facing, ancient rhyodacite soils over nutrient-poor grey loam, this is a block that produces something darker and more brooding than the region is known for. Destemmed and whole bunch fruit, nine months in old French and new Austrian oak, unfined and unfiltered. The result is a Pinot Noir of uncommon savouriness and depth - atypical, deliberate, and built to improve for a decade or more. For those who thought they knew what Yarra Pinot tasted like.
